My art is based on questions like:
· What would the glass look like if…?
· I’ve never seen that done but I wonder if I could do it?
· I was told glass won’t do that, but what if I tried it a new way?
I assume that I will figure out a process to accomplish the shape I want (both internal and external) regardless of the challenges. In addition to the technical challenges, there are decisions about how to manipulate light to accomplish the look I want; About changing the external or internal shapes; or perhaps changing the exterior finish. A hand rubbed finish allows the glass to interact with the light in subtle and variable ways, while a highly polished finish allows the viewer to see the interior space clearly producing a very different effect. Often the piece will demand a shape change or certain exterior treatment, and I find following the piece’s suggestion usually works out for the best.
I don’t use traditional lost wax and plaster mold construction techniques. My molds are made from ceramic fiber board using computer aided design, a CNC machine, welder and hand finishing. I work alone and all the work to produce my art, from the original idea to mold construction, kiln work and cold work is done in my studio
